what do i need to start?

Please be aware that this 2 day OWC is an intensive course, coupled with the fact that conditions in the Komodo National Park can be challenging at times, we strongly advise you to have already tried diving before and, be confident and comfortable in the ocean to ensure the best chance (and enjoyment!) of completing this course.

You need to be in good medical health. Have a look at this medical form. If you can answer 'yes' to any of the questions, you will need to see your doctor and be signed off as medically fit to dive before you can participate in the course. Please do this prior to travel to avoid any issues with your course.

Of course, a readiness for adventure will never go amiss!

Minimum age: 10 years old.

For Komodo National Park courses, we do recommend a minimum age of 12 years and confidence in the water.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?

To take the Open Water Course onboard KLM Eliya you must complete your theory prior to arrival. The PADI e-Learning link will be sent to you by us once you have completed your booking. The e-Learning takes most people 8-10 hours to complete so please leave yourself plenty of time to get it all completed before you come aboard.

The practical part of your course will be completed during your first 2 days onboard so the remaining few days you will be able to put everything you have been learning into practice while enjoying the huge variety of marine life that we get here in Komodo!

what will i do?

Once you board the KLM Eliya, you will meet your Instructor and they will take you through a short quiz, before going through the most relevant information with you.

You must successfully complete a 10 minute unaided float as well as completing a basic swimming test to ensure you are safe to dive, these aren't timed, but they are in open ocean (water too deep to stand in), not in a swimming pool!

Your instructor will guide you through 5 skill sessions and 4 open water dives to complete your training over two days. Once you have completed these sessions you will be a fully certified Open Water Diver! All dives will be conducted in the ocean so you will not miss a second of the incredible Komodo National Park!

how much does it cost?

The Open Water Course costs $500*

This price includes your online theory training, dive certification as well as all of the required PADI training.

*this will be on top of the 6 day 5 night package rate

Open Water Course Schedule

The Open Water Course will be completed during the first 2 days of your trip. On arrival you will meet your Instructor who will take you through a quick review to ensure you have remembered your theory sessions. This is a great opportunity to ask any questions and clarify any sections that you may have been unclear about.

Once this is complete you can begin the in-water tests and training. Your swim tests consist of an unaided float and a swim test. The swim test is not timed, but will be in the ocean, in water too deep to stand in, without any flotation devices, thus, you do need to be a good swimmer and confident in the water.

The course itself consists of 5 "confined" skills sessions that will be completed in calm pool-like conditions where you will practice 24 scuba skills with the help of your Instructor. You will also complete 4 open water dives where you will continue to fine tune your diving abilities and practice some of the skills that you learned in the previous sessions. For the first 2 open water dives you will go to a maximum of 12m and for open water dives 3 & 4 you will head down to 18m!

The e-Learning takes most people 8-10 hours to complete so please leave yourself plenty of time to get it all completed before you come aboard.

PRACTICAL PORTION- CONFINED & OPEN WATER DIVES

During the 5 confined Skill water sessions, you will practise 24 basic scuba skills under the guidance of your PADI instructor. The skills will be demonstrated to you, and repeated as needed to build your confidence- this will then allow you to have a go in a controlled environment.

You will also need to complete a 200m swim, or 300m snorkel, as well as a 10 minute float. All this is done in the ocean, which means you should be able to see some awesome marine life from the moment you start! It’s not unheard of to have manta rays swim past you as you’re practising your skills!

During your open water dives, you will repeat some of the skills from the confined water dives to ensure you have understood the principles and can complete them unassisted. You’ll learn how to plan and execute dives safely, how to react in case of an emergency, and of course your instructor will help you work on your buoyancy control so that you can explore the incredible sites in this region, whilst interacting responsibly with the marine life.

You can expect to see lots of exciting marine life such as turtles, manta rays, tropical reef fish and coral and much, much more! During Open Water Dives 1 & 2 you’ll dive to a maximum of 12m, and during Open water dives 3 & 4 maximum 18m.
