Liveaboard diving experience;
The sun rises gently over the jagged hills of Komodo, casting gold across calm waters. Youโre already awake, barefoot, sipping espresso on the deck of a handcrafted Phinisi as the dive deck hums to life.
This isnโt a dream. Itโs a liveaboard diving experience, and it might just change how you travel forever.
In this blog, we take you behind the scenes โ through a full day aboard KLM Eliya โ so you can feel exactly what itโs like to live, dive, and breathe the ocean from the comfort of your floating home.
A liveaboard is more than just a boat with beds. Itโs a full immersion โ into the sea, into the rhythm of nature, into slow mornings and salty hair and underwater wonder. You dive more, relax more, and connect more deeply with both the ocean and the people around you.
Itโs about waking up at the dive site, not traveling there.
Itโs about diving 3โ4 times a day โ and still having time to nap in the sun, explore remote islands, or laugh over dinner under the stars.
Most mornings start just before sunrise. The sea is glassy. Coffee is already brewing. You might hear the crew prepping tanks or the soft shuffle of other guests easing into the day.
No alarms. Just the natural rhythm of the ocean.
Tea, toast, fruit, or banana pancakes โ enough to energize you for dive #1.
Your dive guide shares the plan for the morning: site name, marine life to watch for, currents, entry technique. Briefings are relaxed but detailed, and you can always ask questions.
Maybe itโs manta rays gliding through a cleaning station. Maybe itโs a slow drift past coral gardens. Maybe itโs sharks and schooling jacks. You never really know โ thatโs the beauty.
You surface, eyes wide, heart full.
Back onboard, youโre greeted with warm towels, ginger tea, and the smell of breakfast. Eggs, toast, rice porridge โ you earned it.
After a surface interval lounging in the sun, itโs time for round two.
Sites are chosen based on conditions and guest preferences. KLM Eliya is flexible, and your input matters.
Between dives, thereโs no rush.
Read a book. Chat with new friends. Lounge on the sun deck. Take a nap. The boat becomes your safe, floating retreat.
The crew keeps things running smoothly โ gear is cleaned, tanks refilled, meals prepped.
You just breathe.
Our chef crafts local and international dishes, served alfresco. Think Indonesian curries, fresh vegetables, pasta, sambals, and warm chocolate cake for dessert.
Dietary preferences? No problem.
This dive might be a stunning reef wall, a vibrant coral slope, or a macro playground.
You return with stories โ of ghost pipefish sightings, or a rare shark encounter โ to share over tea and snacks.
One of the most magical moments: diving into the blue as the day fades. Watch the reef shift from day to night โ octopus hunting, feather stars unfurling, bioluminescence dancing.
Not a fan of night dives? No worries โ the sunset views from the deck are just as unforgettable.
Dinner is always a highlight. Guests gather to share dive stories, toast with cold beers or ginger tea, and sometimes even stargaze from beanbags on the upper deck.
No TV. No distractions. Just connection โ to nature, to each other.
You head to your air-conditioned ensuite cabin, shower off the salt, and fall asleep to the gentle sway of the sea โ knowing tomorrow brings more.
More adventure.
More life.
More memories.
The liveaboard diving experience isnโt about luxury for luxuryโs sake. Itโs about being present. Being immersed. Being free from the everyday distractions of life on land.
You eat well, sleep deeply, dive often, and connect to nature like never before. Whether youโre a seasoned diver or brand new, the transformation is the same: you leave changed.
Designed by divers, for divers, KLM Eliya blends the soul of traditional Phinisi craftsmanship with all the comforts of a boutique retreat.
With Komodo as your backyard and a handpicked team to take care of you, this is more than a dive trip. Itโs a memory youโll carry for life.

Komodo liveaboard for beginners may sound intimidating โ but what if we told you that Komodo liveaboards are actually one of the best ways to ease into diving โ even for beginners?
Especially when the boat is built to make you feel safe, supported, and inspired โ like the KLM Eliya.
Whether youโve just got your Open Water certification or youโre still hesitating to book your first diving holiday, this guide is here to show you why beginner divers not only can join a Komodo liveaboard, but why they should.
One of the most common fears on a liveaboard for beginners is: What if Iโm the least experienced person onboard?
We get it. But aboard KLM Eliya, thatโs never a problem. Our dive guides are trained professionals with years of experience in Komodo, and theyโre passionate about sharing the ocean with everyone โ no matter their certification level.
Youโll be briefed before every dive, supported in and out of the water, and always diving in small groups tailored to your experience. You’re never alone. We are a liveaboard for beginners friendly ๐
Havenโt dived in over a year? Still adjusting your buoyancy? No worries.
At Scuba Junkie, we offer free refresher sessions to help you feel 100% ready before the first dive. Youโll practice a few basic skills (like mask clearing or regulator recovery) and get comfortable with your gear before heading into the magical waters of Komodo.
We keep things chill, friendly, and designed to boost your confidence.
Komodo is known for strong currents โ but that doesnโt mean every dive is a wild ride.
In fact, the park is home to a huge variety of sites, and our Cruise Director and guides choose daily dive sites based on conditions and your level. Calm bays, gentle slopes, and stunning coral gardens are always on the menu โ especially in the south and central areas of the park.
One of the best things about liveaboard diving is the simplicity. You donโt need to carry tanks, rinse gear, or rush between hotels and dive shops. Everything is done for you.
On KLM Eliya, your gear is set up by our crew each morning, and rinsed after every dive. You wake up, walk a few steps, and plunge into paradise โ no stress, no logistics.
From dive briefings to post-dive chats on deck, every moment on a liveaboard is an opportunity to learn.
By the end of your trip, youโll feel more comfortable in the water, understand marine life behavior, learn how to read currents, and maybe even master your buoyancy like a pro. Think of it as an advanced diving workshop… disguised as a holiday.
Unlike some resorts where you may dive with dozens of people, KLM Eliya is intimate and personal, which is great for liveaboard beginners. We host a maximum of 14 guests and dive in small groups, which means more attention, better buddy support, and a sense of family.
Plus, with ensuite cabins, a dedicated chef, an espresso machine, and cozy decks to relax on โ youโll feel pampered every minute.
Youโll see manta rays, reef sharks, turtles, and coral gardens glowing with life. Youโll hike to viewpoints, spot Komodo dragons on Rinca Island, and sip coffee under a blanket of stars.
This is not just a diving trip โ itโs a life experience. And once youโve done it, youโll realize: you didnโt need to be an expert to begin. You just needed the right boat, the right people, and a little courage.
Our handcrafted Phinisi-style boat was designed with divers in mind โ and beginner divers especially love the little details:
The Komodo National Park can feel intimidating at first glance โ but once youโre onboard KLM Eliya, youโll feel at ease, supported, and excited.
Because every diver started as a beginner. And thereโs no better place to fall in love with diving than Komodo.
Have you just completed your Open Water and wondering if Komodo is your next step? Ask us in the comments โ weโd love to help you feel confident about your first liveaboard adventure!

What to expect from Raja Ampat Marine Life.
There are places that feel so untouched, so wild and vibrant, that stepping into them feels like crossing into another world. Raja Ampat is one of them.
Imagine drifting through crystal-clear waters where every glance reveals another marvel: a manta gliding silently above, a sea fan swaying with pygmy seahorses, a flash of reef sharks patrolling the edge of a drop-off. Itโs not a dream โ itโs Raja Ampat marine life, Indonesiaโs crown jewel of marine biodiversity.
And aboard KLM Eliya, you donโt just visit this paradise โ you live in it.
Located off the northwest tip of New Guinea in Southwest Papua, Indonesia, Raja Ampat (meaning โFour Kingsโ) is a remote archipelago of over 1,500 small islands, cays, and shoals. Despite its remoteness, it has become one of the worldโs most sought-after destinations for divers and marine scientists alike.
What makes it so special? Its location at the heart of the Coral Triangle, the epicenter of global marine biodiversity. Raja Ampat is a hotspot where the Pacific and Indian Oceans meet โ a confluence that feeds its reefs with rich nutrients and supports astonishing life.
According to Conservation International, Raja Ampat holds the world record for the highest number of fish species seen in a single dive โ 374. More than 600 species of coral (75% of the worldโs known species) thrive here. Thereโs simply no other place on Earth like it.
Raja Ampat is not just a marine park โ itโs home to resilient, warm communities who have lived in harmony with the sea for generations. Papuan villages like Arborek, Sawandarek, and Yenbuba welcome visitors with smiles, traditional dances, and simple stilt houses built over water.
Fishing and sago harvesting remain vital here, but thanks to marine protection efforts, many locals have shifted to sustainable tourism roles โ dive guides, boat crew, conservation rangers. These are the stewards of the sea, sharing their home with divers while protecting Raja Ampat marine life.
Raja Ampat is home to both reef mantas (Mobula alfredi) and oceanic mantas (Mobula birostris). At famed cleaning stations like Manta Sandy or Manta Ridge, you can hover weightless as these giantsโsome with wingspans over 5 metersโcircle gracefully just meters above.
These encounters are not only visually breathtaking; theyโre crucial to science. Rajaโs mantas are part of ongoing conservation tagging projects. You may even spot a tagged individual mid-dive!
Once overfished, Raja Ampat has become a sanctuary for sharks. Blacktip, whitetip, and grey reef sharks are common on dives, with rarer sightings of wobbegongs (the quirky carpet shark) and even walking sharks, found nowhere else on Earth.
Since 2012, the entire area has been declared a shark sanctuary, making Raja a powerful example of how marine protection works.
At sites like Cape Kri and Melissaโs Garden, divers are treated to mind-blowing coral formations โ hard and soft corals in colors that seem Photoshopped, from bright purple to fluorescent greens.
Unlike in many places around the world, coral bleaching events here have been minimal. Why? Thanks to strong currents, deep-water upwellings, and strict conservation laws, Raja Ampat’s reefs remain resilient and full of life.
Yes, the big fish are stunning โ but Raja also rewards the patient. Look closely and youโll spot pygmy seahorses clinging to sea fans, blue-ringed octopus, nudibranchs of all colors, and mantis shrimp with punch-fast reflexes.
This blend of mega and micro is what makes diving in Raja feel like flipping between a National Geographic documentary and a BBC close-up.
Few things give a diver goosebumps like being surrounded by a swirling school of barracudas, jacks, or batfish. At My Reef or Sardine Reef, you may find yourself lost in a tornado of silver scales, sunlight flickering through from above.
While not guaranteed, dolphins, pilot whales, and even dugongs have been spotted in Rajaโs open waters. You never know what youโll see next โ and thatโs part of the thrill.
On night dives, something magical happens: the reefs glow. Not from your torch, but from nature itself. Bioluminescent plankton sparkle with each movement, creating an underwater galaxy youโll never forget.
Raja Ampat is a model for marine conservation. Its marine park is divided into zones: no-take zones, sustainable fishing areas, and tourism zones. Entrance fees directly fund reef patrols, village development, and education.
This is diving with a purpose โ knowing your trip supports a living, breathing marine sanctuary.
Thereโs only one way to fully absorb the magic of Raja Ampat marine life โ and thatโs on a liveaboard. KLM Eliya isnโt just a boat; itโs a floating boutique hotel steeped in tradition and comfort.
Lovingly handcrafted in the Phinisi style and equipped for divers of all levels, KLM Eliya offers:
Most importantly, she takes you where few others go โ weaving through central and southern Raja, reaching pristine reefs and secluded coves.
Raja Ampat marine life is not just beautiful โ itโs sacred. Itโs living proof of what our oceans can be when they are loved and protected. When you dive here, you donโt just witness a paradise โ you become part of the story.
And thereโs no better way to experience it than aboard KLM Eliya, where every sunrise, every dive, every encounter leaves you just a little more breathless.

Komodo underwater paradise, the story below the surface ……
If Komodo were a storybook, it would be the kind that grabs you by the hand and pulls you down into a realm where reality blurs with magic.
Youโve probably heard of its dragons and its manta raysโthose are the stars of the show. But what if I told you that behind the curtain, thereโs a dazzling ensemble of performers waiting for their moment under your dive torch?
Welcome to the Komodo underwater paradise, where dugongs glide in silence, reef sharks cruise the deep blue, and bobtail squid blink like fireflies in the sand. This is a place where macro meets mega, where your camera never rests, and your sense of wonder grows dive by dive.
Some dive destinations are for big fish. Others are for macro.
Komodo? Itโs greedyโit gives you both.
With over 1,000 species of fish and 260 species of coral, the Komodo National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for good reason. You donโt have to choose between thrilling pelagics and mind-blowing macro. On a single day, you might dive with a school of trevally in the morning, photograph a ghost pipefish at lunch, and float beside manta rays by sunset.
Tip: Our 6D5N itinerary is designed to explore every corner of this underwater spectacle.
Letโs start big. Komodoโs currents are alive. Theyโre what bring in the giants:
This isnโt staged. Itโs raw, wild, and real. Drift dives can launch you through clouds of fusiliers while mantas swoop overhead like underwater kites.
But slow downโbecause the real treasure might be in the sand.
Komodo is a macro diverโs dream. Its volcanic seabed and biodiversity mean the critters here are next level:
Itโs why underwater photographers book return trips. One dive site can yield a dozen new subjects if your eyes are tuned to tiny.
Want to learn more about these? Check out our Critters of Komodo โ Part 1 blog!
Komodoโs magic comes not just from what you see, but how itโs delivered.
Dives are selected based on tide, current, visibility, and experience level. Some dives offer slow sand-sifting exploration, while others offer exhilarating channel drifts where big fish wait in ambush.
Onboard KLM Eliya, we adjust our dive plan to make sure every guestโwhether they crave macro, mantas, or bothโgets their fill.
Some divers come for the thrill of drifting with mantas.
Some come for the chaseโsearching the sand for something with arms, stripes, and the power to mimic a lionfish.
Komodo welcomes both.
This Komodo underwater paradise is not about choosing a side. Itโs about saying yes to everything. To big eyes and big fins. To critters and currents. To getting surprisedโover and over again.
Komodo is not a place you visit once. Itโs the kind of destination that whispers:
โLook again.โ
And when you do, something new is always waiting.
What do you dive forโbig fish or tiny critters? Or are you like us and want it all?
Tell us in the comments belowโyour next dive might just be in Komodoโs magic.

–Komodo critter diving guide–
Welcome to Komodo National Park, where dragons roam the land and critters rule the reefs. While Komodo is world-famous for thrilling currents, manta rays, and vibrant coral walls, thereโs another side to these waters that only the most attentive divers get to see.
Hidden in the sand, tucked into coral rubble, or boldly flashing warning colorsโKomodoโs macro critters are nothing short of mind-blowing. This Komodo critter diving guide is your backstage pass to the weird, the rare, and the wonderful. So when your dive guide starts pointing at a bit of seaweed, youโll know that might just be a ghost nudi about to dance.
With a body like drifting lace and a face like no other, this nudibranch is one of Komodoโs holy grails. The Melibe colemani isnโt just rareโitโs borderline mythical.
Pro tip: If your guide is excitedly circling a patch of โnothingโโstay put and look closer.
Adorably eerie, this critter is best known for carrying shells or coconut halves to use as mobile homes. Itโs smart, shy, and a total heartthrob once spotted.
Watch for movement in the debrisโit might be more than just trash.
Small, stunning, and deceptively deadly, the Blue Ring is a powerful reminder that beauty in nature can bite. But donโt worryโit wonโt attack unless threatened.
Never poke around with fingersโyour guide will point it out safely.
A nighttime gem, these cuties are as round as marbles and glow under your torch thanks to bioluminescent bacteria.
Night dive? Stay low and scan the sand slowlyโtheyโre tiny but magical.
As colorful as a carnival and twice as outrageous, the Harlequin Shrimp hunts sea stars in pairs and lives a drama-filled life among coral rubble.
Youโll fall in love instantlyโbut remember, look, donโt touch.
They may be common in some regions, but spotting a Thorny Seahorse in Komodo always feels like a win. Their camouflage is next-level.
Let your eyes follow algae linesโyou may just find a hidden hitchhiker.
The name alone tells you youโre in for a treat. The Wunderpus is a hypnotic, daytime mimic octopus with striped arms and moves like an underwater magician.
Itโs shy but curiousโgive it space and time to reveal itself.
Diving in Komodo is not just about big fish and ripping currentsโitโs about the slow, careful, and awe-inspiring search for the tiny treasures that others swim right past. With this Komodo critter diving guide, youโll be ready to spot, appreciate, and fall in love with some of the oceanโs most extraordinary and bizarre creatures.
Have you seen any of these critters on your dives? Which one is still on your bucket list?

Thereโs a place where dragons roam the hills and manta rays glide through electric blue waters. A place where each dive is a burst of adrenaline, and each surface interval feels like a scene from a travel magazine. Welcome to Komodo National Parkโa destination so rich, both above and below the waterline, it defies seasons.
If youโre thinking about diving Komodo, donโt wait for the dry months. The off season has its own kind of magicโand weโre here to show you why.
Letโs clear this up: off season in Komodo (typically November to February) doesnโt mean bad weather or bad diving. In fact, itโs the season where manta rays come out to play in large numbers, the southern sites awaken with life, and the lush green hills paint a dramatic backdrop to your adventure. Yes, there may be rainโbut it rarely lasts all day. And the payoff? Fewer crowds, more marine life, and a richer, more personal experience.
Because of the parkโs unique geography, Komodo is diveable year-round. We simply adjust the areas we visit depending on the wind and sea conditions:
That means we donโt stopโwe just shift. And often, what we gain in seasonal change are moments weโd never experience otherwise. Think: a manta train looping around you in crystal-clear waters, while your group is the only one on the site.
Komodo doesnโt just deliver underwater magicโitโs also an adventure on land. When you sail with us aboard KLM Eliya, youโre not just diving Komodoโyouโre experiencing it in full. Between dives, we explore the parkโs iconic landscapes, offering hikes to panoramic viewpoints or walks among the legendary Komodo dragons on Rinca Island.
Where else in the world can you do a deep dive with reef sharks in the morning and then spot a two-meter dragon stalking the savannah by afternoon?
โThe diving was world-class, but it was the dragon trek that truly gave me chills. You feel like you’re living in a nature documentary.โ โ Guest review
Off season or not, KLM Eliya is designed to spoil you. This hand-built phinisi liveaboard combines traditional craftsmanship with modern luxury. Picture yourself:
Whether itโs sunshine or a light tropical drizzle, life onboard feels like your own private expedition, complete with chef-prepared meals, sunsets from the top deck, and a crew who remembers your favorite drink before you ask.
Yes, there may be rainโbut it’s part of the charm. The occasional tropical shower freshens the air, softens the hills into bright green, and makes the mantas rise to the surface to feed. The water stays warm (24โ28ยฐC), visibility remains excellent, and dive sites are bursting with marine action.
Bring a light raincoat for the hikes, a hoodie for windy evenings on deck, and get ready for the adventure of a lifetimeโrain or shine.
Labuan Bajo, your gateway to Komodo, is easy to reach from Bali or Jakarta, and we always recommend arriving the day before departure to ensure a smooth start to your liveaboard trip. Off-season also means better flight prices, more accommodation choices pre/post-trip, and a calmer vibe in town.
Weโll take care of the restโfrom airport pickups to hot ginger tea after your dive.
Absolutely. If you want untouched dive sites, high manta activity, intimate dragon encounters, and the adventure of a lifetime wrapped in luxuryโdiving Komodo off season is your chance. Itโs not just a trip. Itโs a story youโll tell again and again.
๐ฌ Have you ever dived in the off season? Would you try it in Komodo? Tell us your thoughts or questions in the commentsโweโd love to hear your story.

Komodo macro diving is one of the most underrated experiences in Indonesia. While most divers come chasing thrilling currents and iconic pelagics, a slower, more intricate world waits to be discoveredโone filled with drama, color, and creatures stranger than fiction.
This guide is for divers, underwater photographers, and anyone curious enough to discover this new world.
Komodo sits within the Coral Triangle, one of the most biologically rich marine regions on Earth. Itโs not just home to sharks and raysโKomodoโs seagrass beds, rubble slopes, and coral outcrops nurture thousands of tiny species. Scientists continue to discover new nudibranch species here, making the area a playground for macro lovers and critter spotters.
When divers hear “macro,” they imagine muck. But Komodo macro diving offers more than black sand and rubble. Look closer: in coral bommies, under mangrove roots, and among feather stars youโll find entire food webs in motion. Tiny crustaceans, symbiotic relationships between shrimp and gobies, and creatures that mimic their surroundings with astonishing accuracy.
Ironically, the very currents that make Komodo famous for drift dives also fuel its macro diversity. Strong water movement brings nutrients that sustain the tiniest life formsโlike filter-feeding tunicates, hydroids, and sponges. These, in turn, become micro-habitats for ornate pipefish, decorator crabs, and other masters of disguise. This is why Komodo macro diving is so great!
Much of Komodoโs macro magic comes alive during sunset or night dives. Under cover of darkness, rare critters like bobtail squid, stargazers, and bioluminescent plankton emerge. Armed with a torch and a patient eye, youโll be treated to one of the most bizarre night shows in the ocean.
๐ Did you know? Some cephalopods use bursts of light to disorient predators, attract matesโor simply blend into the sparkle of the sea.
Unlike larger marine life that may migrate or shift with seasons, the macro residents of Komodo stay put. Whether you visit in dry season (MarchโOctober) or wet season (NovemberโFebruary), youโll always find exceptional macro life on every itinerary.
๐ Plus, Komodoโs cooler waters in the rainy season often mean more nudibranch and cephalopod activity.
Many divers are so focused on โthe big stuffโ that they miss the tiny miracles under their fins. Some of the most memorable underwater moments come not from a passing shark, but from watching a juvenile frogfish wobble across a sponge, or spotting a tiny seahorse clinging to a sea fan no wider than a pencil.
๐ฏ Macro diving demands focus, buoyancy, and curiosityโskills that grow with every dive.
The macro life in Komodo can be incredibly well-camouflaged. Thatโs why diving with the right guide makes all the difference. Our crew has been exploring these waters for years and knows exactly where to lookโwhether it’s on a sponge-covered slope or tucked in a sea fan. Theyโll point out creatures you didnโt even know existed, making every dive feel like a private safari.
๐ง Tip: Let your guide know you’re into macroโtheyโll tailor the dive to show you the hidden gems.
Komodoโs underwater world is not just about adrenalineโitโs also about awe. Komodo macro diving invites you to slow down, sharpen your eyes, and marvel at evolution’s weirdest masterpieces. It’s an experience as rewarding as any manta momentโand once you dive into the details, you might never look at a coral head the same way again.
๐ฌ Whatโs the tiniest critter thatโs ever left a big impression on you? Share your favorite macro moment in the comments below!

This UNESCO World Heritage site is not only one of the seven natural wonders of the world but also a diverโs paradise. Here are 10 compelling reasons why Komodo National Park should be on every traveler’s bucket list.

Komodo National Park is world-renowned for its vibrant marine life. Home to more than 1,000 species of fish, manta rays, sharks, and over 260 species of coral, itโs no wonder this park is considered one of the top dive destinations in the world. Whether you are an experienced diver or a snorkeling enthusiast, the underwater life here is simply spectacular.
Nothing says Komodo quite like the famous Komodo dragons. As the largest living lizards on Earth, these reptiles can grow up to 3 meters in length and weigh around 70 kg. Encountering these prehistoric creatures in their natural habitat on Komodo and Rinca Islands is an unforgettable experience.
The park features some of the most exhilarating dive spots globally. Sites like Batu Bolong, Manta Point, and Castle Rock offer adrenaline-pumping dives, incredible visibility, and the chance to see reef sharks, and turtles.
Besides diving, Komodo National Park offers thrilling land excursions. Hike to the famous Gili Lawa viewpoint for panoramic vistas of rugged hills and azure waters. Explore Rinca Island to spot Komodo dragons and other wildlife, including buffalo, wild pigs, and exotic birds.
One of the most unique beaches globally, Pink Beach owes its vibrant hue to microscopic organisms called Foraminifera. The contrast of pink sand with turquoise waters creates a picturesque scene perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and capturing stunning photos.
The wet season (November to February) is prime time for spotting manta rays. These graceful giants are often seen in groups at Manta Point, gliding effortlessly through the currents. Diving or snorkeling alongside them is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
